Mentored training in Celtic Shamanism–East

Welcome!  This is the first class in the mentored training in Celtic Shamanism.  In this class we discuss the East direction on the Celtic Spirit Wheel, discuss the role of the shaman and the initiatory tests needed to become a member of the band of warriors, look at the Festival of Beltane, a time of fertility, and meet with salmon who holds much significance in the Celtic world.

For this class you will need to have a CD of shamanic journeying drumming.  Two of the best that I have found are Michael Harner’s Shamanic Journey Multiple Drumming CD, and Sacred Drums for the Shamanic Journey CD (No author listed).  Many shamanic books now have a CD in the back of them too which you can journey to—Shamanic Journeying by Sandra Ingerman is excellent for beginning journeying.

As you listen to the recordings, when you come to a journey, stop the recording, go on your journey, write down your journey in your Earth Journal and then return to the recording.  Please do not move ahead with the recording until you have gone on your journey and recorded it.  If you have someone you can share your journeys with, that is the most helpful.

Also mentioned is the reading of poetry as a part of this training.  You can incorporate poetry into your daily shamanic ritual or whenever you have some time to relax for a moment, and hear the poem’s message with your heart.  There are some small books of poetry that may be helpful for you if are interested:  The Book of Celtic Verse by John Matthews, To Bless this Space Between Us by John O’Donohue, Earth Prayers from Around the world, edited by Elizabeth Roberts, Earth Poems by Ivo Mosley, Life Prayers by Elizabeth Roberts—-just to name a few.  Some of my most favorite poets are Rumi and Rabindranath Tagore.  Maybe you already have your favorite poets that you can draw heart wisdom from.

Regarding your Earth Journals which you will begin with this training, these journals are to be your companion through this course.  Here you record your journeys, your dreams, your experiences with nature, your thoughts that help you process through some of these experiences, poetry etc. etc. It will be your written record of your movement through this training.   You may want to open a file for your earth journal that you can just submit your work to me online at the end of each class.  Or you may want to write in a paper journal and scan the pages and create a file and send it to me.  Or you can physically copy the pages and send them to me in the regular mail.  Email address for all course work is [email protected]  My physical home address is his information.

Once a month conference calls with me and the other students will be held on the last Sunday of the month from 6-7pm CST.  Prior to the call you will be given the number to call along with the pin # to enter the call.  Let’s all hope that technology glitches are few!  And for those of you who have a facebook account, friend me, and you will be able to access our Earthdrummer’s Shamanic Journeyer’s page after I invite you.  This page is for all those who have studied shamanism with me.  We share dreams, journeys, etc. and stay in touch with one another.

Below are the recordings and after that are some handouts that might be helpful for you.  The most important books I recommend to people to read initially about celtic shamanism is Tom Cowan’s Fire in the Head, which gives a more scholarly view, and Frank MacEowen’s The Mist Filled Path, which gives a heart view of the Celtic perspective.

If you have questions or concerns, please email me.  I love questions as it tells me you are engaged and thinking about the material!  That’s a good thing!  If I don’t have the answers, I will try and find them out for you.

Be aware that as you progress through this training that I may be sending you via email information that may be helpful for you.
